Construction Field Engineer 2/3 - HVAC & BAS
About job
This position entails serving as a Construction Field Engineer with a specialization in Heating,Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC), and Building Automation Systems (BAS) within the Institutional Project Delivery group. The role is central to implementing engineering programs that support modifications and new installations across a variety of facility types. The engineer acts as a critical liaison between construction, project management, and design teams to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to stringent quality standards, thereby supporting the laboratory's scientific and national security objectives.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring worksite safety and security compliance
- Reviewing design packages and work documents for completeness
- Interpreting engineering drawings and preparing field sketches
- Preparing material requisitions and conducting material takeoffs
- Inspecting construction work for adherence to specifications and codes
- Resolving technical issues in the field
- Coordinating responses to Requests for Information (RFI)
- Documenting field change requests and tracking their resolution
- Monitoring project progress and deficiencies
- Assisting with quality oversight and punch list generation
- At Level 3: Performing constructability reviews, cost estimation, assisting with system start-up, and mentoring junior engineers
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Scientific discipline from an accredited institution
- For Level 2: Minimum 5 years of relevant experience demonstrating strong knowledge of construction planning, execution methodologies, safety practices, and commercial/industrial building systems
- For Level 3: Minimum 8 years of experience with additional expertise in quality assurance systems, risk mitigation, and schedule recovery strategies
- Equivalent combinations of education and recognized certifications are acceptable
- U.S. citizenship required for Q-level security clearance
Desirable skills
- Extensive hands-on experience with design, installation, maintenance, or programming of HVAC and BAS systems
- Completion of nationally accredited apprenticeship program
- Documented experience as a journeyman, foreman, or in managing construction personnel
- Nationally accredited inspector certifications (fire alarm, electrical, mechanical, etc.)
- Professional familiarity with LANL’s Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering procedures
Conditions
- Strictly onsite position in Los Alamos, New Mexico
- Must pass federal background investigation and obtain Q security clearance
- U.S. citizenship mandatory for security clearance
- Subject to pre-employment and random drug testing
- Positive test for marijuana results in termination (illegal under federal law)
- One-year commitment required before applying for other internal positions
