Rome, also known as Roma in Italian, serves as the capital of Italy and is home to a population of 2.8 million people, commonly referred to as the Romans. As per legend, the city was established by the twin brothers Romulus and Remus in 753 BCE. Rome has an exceptional history and is considered the third most popular city for tourists in Europe and fourteenth worldwide. People from across the globe are drawn to Rome to explore its remarkable monuments and archaeological sites, experience its renowned cuisine, and immerse themselves in its lively atmosphere.
The city of Rome is situated on the banks of the Tiber River and was established atop seven hills, namely Palatine, Aventine, Capitoline, Caelian, Esquiline, Quirinal, and Viminal hills. The area around Palatine and Capitoline hills emerged as the center of power of the vast Roman Empire. Tourists can explore numerous ruins and excavations here, including the Forum Romanum, and the Colosseum, which provides insight into the gladiators' battles in this immense Roman amphitheater. The Pantheon, which now serves as a church, features a distinctive open, circular roof and is among the best-preserved buildings from ancient Rome. The Via Appia offers a glimpse into the past, following one of Rome's oldest roads. Essentially, the city of Rome is like a massive museum, and it is not surprising that the entire historic city center is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
