The STM32 microcontroller family is a popular choice for embedded system design.
The DIP (Dual Inline Package) packaging, which is a through-hole package that has leads extending from both sides of the IC and is mounted on a PCB (Printed Circuit Board), can also offer several advantages for certain applications:
Prototyping
Repair
Cost
Availability
Flexibility
However, after searching for DIP STM32, I could not find any product. Is there any microcontroller of this type? If not, why ST Microelectronics does not produce such chips?
There are a few reasons why STM32 microcontrollers are not available in DIP packages:
STM32 microcontrollers have a large number of pins, making it difficult to fit them into a DIP package. DIP packages typically have a maximum of 40 pins, whereas STM32 microcontrollers can have up to 144 pins or more.
DIP packages are becoming less popular and therefore more expensive to manufacture. STM32 microcontrollers are typically used in high-volume applications, and manufacturers prefer to use surface-mount technology (SMT) packages, which are more cost-effective and smaller in size.
Surface-mount packages offer better electrical and thermal performance than DIP packages. SMT packages have shorter interconnects, which reduces parasitic capacitance and inductance, resulting in better signal integrity and higher speed operation.
Surface-mount packages offer more design flexibility than DIP packages. SMT packages can be placed on both sides of the PCB, which allows for a more compact and efficient layout.
Therefore, while DIP packages were popular in the past, they are no longer the preferred package for high-performance microcontrollers such as STM32, due to their limitations in terms of size, cost, and performance.
